Task 9: Network Assignment Using Golden Record Curation Quiz Data

Writer's picture: Karen WangKaren Wang

Figure 1

For this exercise, I studied the node connectivity network using Palladio to find out the relationships of people's choices in the Golden Record Curation Quiz. It was overwhelming at first, as data analysis and math aren't my strongest suits, yet after dragging the nodes and edges and changing the source and target, there seemed to be some indication about the result of the quiz. By examining Figure 1 from above, I noticed that the big grey nodes were the popular song choices (i.e. the Fifth symphony and the Magic Flute). It is interesting to learn that I have popular taste when it comes to music selection.

Figure 2

When I looked at figure 2, I could not figure out what the number indicated. My guess was the number of groups with each group containing individuals who shared similar choices in song selections. As mentioned in the reading, users can be nodes in a network. In Figure 3, all four groups are shown as a bigger node, which suggests bigger "weight" and all the medium size nodes in the middle of the connectivity web are the common song choices in the quiz. Palladio only gave us part of the data as there is limited information about everyone (gender, age, ethnicity, religion) that may affect the result of the quiz. In this case, the relation within the network is simple, since the result is merely based on number of participants in the survey and the probability of 10 out of 27 song choices. As mentioned in the reading, search engines like Google or websites like TripAdvisor install cookies and collect more hidden information from the users based on their web activity. They later use algorithms to calculate and predict user's preferences. Still, it is interesting to learn about the terminology and the basic concepts of connectivity and network.
