Task 3: Voice to Text by PJ

PJ ‘s voice to text content was interesting since we both encountered similar problems whilst we came up with the content using voice typing. He mentioned his struggle of constantly talking to himself for a few minutes and I had similar struggles when I was speaking and voice typing at the same time. His documentation of process and analysis was very detailed. Like my content, the punctuation was missing since you need to say the punctuation out loud in voice typing. Yet, that’s not how people communicate with each other in oral context. I also like how PJ mentioned homophones, which caused voice typing errors since the word sounds similar but has different spelling depending on the content.

Task 4: Potato Print by Susana

Susana introduced her post with a quote and explained where she found her inspiration of the 5 letter word we were asked to carve out from potato. I like how she quoted from Gutenberg and the other scholar in between her description of the carving process to support her opinion. In our blog, we both shared the difficulties that we encountered while planning and carving the potatoes. Some things Susana did differently to me were the multi-color ink she used to print on paper and the font style. I noticed that she didn’t encounter the trouble of mirroring the letters first, then carving them out so that the word is readable.

Task 6: An Emoji Story by Katie

I like how Katie sets up her web page. Her web page interface is user friendly, where the left side bar has subsections and titles for users to click on and takes them directly to the specific page. On the contrary, my web page is much simpler, where users must scroll down the page to find my blog post (from newest to oldest). It’s great to see how Katie started with an introduction about the purpose of emoji and how it’s used in modern society. The example she provided was clear and easy to comprehend, that the emoji of “praying” can be read as “high five” for others. Different interpretations can make communication complex and unclear. Her emoji story was easy to guess. It’s the movie: Snow White. By the look of her movie choice, I’m glad that I found another Disney fan who used Disney movie for this specific task.

Task 7: Mode-Bending by Anneke

Anneke’s web page is well-structured and easy to navigate. I like how she incorporated her photo and preferred pronoun, which felt like she created a space for interaction. People can learn more about her, and she can interact with other users. This reflects on her mode-bending project where she added the element of having user interaction. By clicking on the icons in the photo (which contains the items in her bag), it will show you audios and hyperlinks that explain the history and significance of the specific items. It reminds me of Pinterest, where users can browse photos and some photos will have hyperlinks that take you to other websites where the items are available for sale. I think this is a great re-designed assignment and I can’t wait to use Genially in my class as well.

Task 8: The Golden Record by Sheena

Sheena’s web space is very colorful and vibrant. She decided to use a brain frame or a think web to showcase her choices of music. Initially, I thought the colored post-its acted like a category, for instance, the blue post-it explained her past that associated her with the music. However, after close reading, I realized it wasn’t organized that way. It would be interesting to sort the reasoning for music choices into categories, so viewers can visualize whether the choice is based on personal experience or opinion. I like the question she raised about different ways extraterrestrial species “listen” or “respond” to sound. The golden record that was sent into space contained just music. It would be even better to incorporate music notes, since outer space species may be more visual than auditorial.

Task 10: Attention Economy by Delian

It was wonderful to see such detailed documentation of the gaming process and analysis. I can certainly connect with my peer (and shared his/her frustration) on how annoying it was to access the game. Yet, this also emphasized the point that web page interface is “customized” based on users’ habits. To think about it, user friendly is the reason why people are drowning in long hours of web surfing and buying items on the internet. We as users are all drowning in “forced continuity”, as the more “convenience” people pursue, the harder it gets to resist temptation on the internet. It is also concerning to know that every user decision we make while working with the web will become part of the data collected to make the web space more “personalized”.
