I found the task intriguing as we have to listen to various kinds of music. It is interesting that these music works were chosen for specific reasons to send to space for communication purpose. After listening to the record, here are my top10 tracks. I chose them based on familiarity and the atmospheric feeling they contain.
Track 1: Brandenburg Concerto
I played the flute for 8 years and my favorite music is from the Baroque period. Its majestic atmosphere painted a picture of palace, royalty and wealth as I was listening to the music.
Track 3: Percussion (Senegal)
Latin dance has always been my hobby. When listening to the track, it reminds me of the dance samba, which also has a strong, bouncy rhythm. The atmosphere of the music is passionate and welcoming.
Track 7: Johnny B. Goode
This is jive music! Since I have been dancing for several years, when I listen to music, I tend to start choreograph dance moves in my head based on the music style. This song also has lyrics which have a direct message of what the artist wanted to deliver. The artist is using the music to tell a story.
Track 10: Gavotte en rondeaux
The melody of this music reminds me of Vivaldi's Four seasons: Spring. It makes me feel like I'm in a countryside, very close to nature, immersing in natural sun light and breeze, green luscious trees and flowers everywhere.
Track 11: The Magic ed Flute (Queen of the night aria)
I chose this music because it is popular and probably the only Opera piece that I have heard of. The beginning of the music is grand which captures the audience's attention. I have taken singing lessons in the past, and it is amazing to learn that people can train their voice to sing Opera (as it contains many skills and much technicality).
Track 13: Panpipes and Drum (Peru)
This piece sounds like tribal music which is used in celebratory events. With the drumming providing steady rhythm, the panpipes give the music a more cheery vibe, whether it is welcoming guests or celebrating a festival.
Track 14: Melancholy Blues
I like the improvisation of jazz music. The trumpet acts like a narrator that tells a story from heart, while the piano and other instruments in the background creates atmosphere which makes the story telling even more vivid.
Track 18: Fifth Symphony (1st movement)
The four distinguished notes make this classical music memorable. I like that the four notes continue to occur throughout the music with variations which seem like the four notes are making a big announcement and want the audience to remember.
Track 21: The Fairie Round
Like its title, the music itself reminds me of dancing fairies and elves in the forests. It feels like a video game score music (fantasy story) where players can roam around in the forest looking for the magic potion.
Track 27: String Quartet No.13 in B flat
The string instruments create a mellow sound which suggests a sad feeling in the piece.
