Did you rely more on syllables, words, ideas or a combination of all of them?
When "writing" about the plot of the movie, I used the combination of ideas and words, but not a lot of syllables. It was challenging to decide which emoji would best describe the "word" or "idea" that I want to convey to my audience. I showed my husband the finished product of my emoji story and he had no idea what movie I was trying to introduce; however, this could also be due to cultural differences as he is not familiar with the movie. I guess what made sense to me, doesn't necessarily make sense to others, especially with the absence of words. Something I noticed while tackling the task is that emojis have to be relevant or closely connected to people's lives. Like Bolter mentioned, the use of icons in emails is to give immediacy of voice and faces. Emojis add feelings to the written texts, therefore, when I tried to create my story plot, the task became challenging as my movie is set in ancient times. I could only find emojis that closely resembled what I wanted to communicate. For this particular movie, the idea is easier to convey than the plot using emojis.
Did you start with the title? Why? Why not?
For this task, I did start working with the title. The title itself wasn't word by word since it's not an English titled movie. I used symbols that convey the main ideas of the movie. The flower symbol is important, as it is related to the family's name in the movie.
Did you choose the work based on how easy it would be to visualize?
I chose this animated movie since I watched the movie version of it last week. I didn't really think about the level of difficulty when it comes to creating the plot and title using solely images. I did try to incorporate a couple of famous scenes, so hopefully it won't be too hard to guess what movie I'm trying to introduce. I did struggle with how complex I should be when creating the story line and how I separate each idea now that punctuation is no longer involved. The only way I could think of was to place the new idea in the next line with each line containing one simple idea. This activity reminds me of how I incorporate picture prompts and emojis for my lessons. When elementary students are learning new sentence patterns (especially second language learners), they respond well with pictures as they are less overwhelming compared to words. I put pictures and emojis in one power point slide and students will have to guess the sentence out loud. With this experience, I realized that a series of pictures can make meaning and deliver messages just like writing.
