Intellectual Production #1: Digital Games and Learning Perspectives (part II)

*Descriptive sentences

1. Gee claims that video games serve a higher purpose than what people have perceived in the past and can contribute to teaching and learning by providing social interaction.

2. Gee states that people tend not to remember the origin of their experience (where and how they acquire information and facts), whether using digital tools or not.

3. Gee states that in the past, writers lacked interaction with the readers as they could not respond to reader’s reactions towards the content of writing. Yet text messaging provides an interactive space for both reader and writer.

* Analytical sentences

1. Gee focuses on how video game ads have better “educational” vision of teaching individuals to be creative, problem-solvers and learn from experiences than regular school systems. Yet, school still has its value such as developing individual’s working habits and harnessing productivity.

2. Gee argues that DTAL system can inspire individuals to become passionate learners (Marco/ Amanda). The process of self-learning fits with Vygotsky’s theory of Zone of Proximal Development, where individual’s learning occurs through support and scaffolding.

*Question

1. As educators, how can we apply the concept of DTAL system into our teaching to enrich students’ learning experience?
